Blues Party

I’m hosting my first ever Election Party next week. I’ve got a lot to celebrate…I’ve been waiting for this moment for eight LONG years. Of course I know Obama’s victory is not certain at this point. If he wins, that would be the ideal outcome and make the champagne taste even sweeter at the end of the night. So I’ll be prepping the election night menu with all of the positive thoughts I can towards what I hope will turn into a victory celebration with my family.

The menu:

Sweet “Victory” Potato Fries with Garlic Curry Aioli

I’ll also carve a pumpkin to pay homage to each party. Of course, I’ll spend more time on the Democratic one.

Garlic Curry Aioli (dip for sweet potatoes):

1/4 cup light mayo or miracle whip
2 small (or 1 large) garlic clove, mashed to a paste with salt, or use garlic powder
Juice from 1/2 lemon
Dash of black pepper
1 tsp curry power, or more to taste
1 dash cayenne pepper
Sea salt to taste

Mourning the loss of a friend

Months ago, a long-time friend of mine ended our relationship. It was, at first, a shock to my system as I had enjoyed nearly 23 years of memories and family ties knowing and thinking about this friend. I didn't know you could mourn the loss of someone living until I no longer was a part of her life any longer and I knew from that point on, I would no longer be invited back into her life.

The cirtumstances of the break up are somewhat troubling since it was a complete misunderstanding of impressions. As she tightly wove her belief system into a porfolio of volunteerism, selflessness and the stuff that Mother Theresa is made out of, over the years, she also became blind to her own biases. I don't need to spill all of the facts, but her judgement about my choices became painfully clear one night over a short dinner, laced with a well intended conversation and an attempt to connect ourselves and our lives after a decade of separation. Afterwards, I learned that as I have so often preached to others about open mindedness and the power of understanding "the other side", I was a victim of her own judgement, someone who had also preached the same.

I'm not really sure if this person will ever return to my life. In addition to losing her as a friend, I also mourn the fact that I cannot pass through a difficult time in her life with her, giving her the support she may need. Growing older affords us new opportunities for new beginnings which includes meeting new people and moving forward. It also bears the scares of relationships from the past that will always impact our lives, even without that person we once loved.

"Quick Witted Humor"

I had a nice compliement handed to me today about a trait that I like to consider I manage well: sense of humor.

At best, I have an odd sense of humor. It takes someone who knows me well to understand where I'm coming from.

It doesn't take a lot to understand where this author is coming from. I enjoy their sense of humor because they make what could be a sore, offensive subject into a comedic relief in a time of PCness. I encourage you to read their blog and laugh more today.

Please note: I conider myself pretty liberal, so I especially have to laugh at the dig on Public Radio fans.
